Living in Geist | Indianapolis Neighborhood Series
Hogan Moving has been a part of the Indianapolis community since 1927. And, as a proud Indianapolis company, we’ve decided to start a blog series highlighting some of the great places to live in the area!
For this blog, we’re highlighting a beautiful community that sits on a reservoir to the northeast of Indianapolis, Geist.
Geist Overview
Homes in the Geist area can technically be located in a few main cities like Indianapolis, Fishers, or McCordsville, but the important part of Geist is that the homes surround the lovely Geist Reservoir.
According to Niche.com, a little less than 10,000 people live in the Geist area. The houses are described as “beautiful” and “upscale”, and one resident called Geist, “a tight-knit community.” This Indianapolis suburb is primarily made up of people who own their homes.
On Niche.com, Geist received an overall A rating. Its ‘A’-rated categories included Housing and Good for Families. Nearly every other category, like Public Schools, Jobs, Outdoor Activities, Diversity, and Nightlife was in the B range.
Additionally, Geist was rated #4 in Best Neighborhoods to Buy A House in Indianapolis, so if you’re looking to invest in buying a house, this may be the right fit for you!

Parks & Recreation
In and around the Geist area there are a variety of places to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Let’s start with the main attraction…
Geist Reservoir | Geist Reservoir is also sometimes referred to as Geist Lake. There are two public boat launches that give you a place to access Geist for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. At the Geist Marina, a full-service marina, you can rent slips and pontoons, launch your boats, store your boat for winter, and more.

Fort Harrison State Park | Fort Harrison offers year-round access to nature and is only a few miles to the southwest of the Geist Reservoir. Enjoy awesome sledding hills in winter, walking through blooming flowers in spring, canoeing down Fall Creek in summer, or watching the trees turn breathtaking colors in fall. It’s an “oasis of green in an urban landscape.”
Geist Park | Geist Park is a 17-acre park “nestled along the banks of Fall Creek.” Use Geist Park as a place to launch your canoe, fish, walk nature trails, and more.
Flat Fork Creek Park | Flat Fork Creek Park features walking trails, mountain bike trails, a fishing pond, a sledding hill, and treehouses. Come here with your family for a day in nature!
Tuttle Orchard | Tuttle Orchard is a family-owned and operated farm and orchard in the Indianapolis area, not far from Geist Reservoir. Enjoy apple picking, the pumpkin patch, the Farm Store, or their café, which features farm-to-table meals.

Going boating with my family on the Geist Reservoir is one of my favorite activities. There also are a lot of new food/ice cream places opening up that are so delicious. The public and private schools around this area are very nice as well.”
And here’s another review, “I love Geist because it is such a tight-knit community. Also, everything you need is in the area so you never need to travel far. The schools are excellent and have rivalries that get everybody out and to all of the sporting events.”
