For this blog, we’re highlighting a popular and vibrant Indianapolis neighborhood, Broad Ripple.
Broad Ripple Overview
Broad Ripple is known as a socially, economically, and ethnically diverse neighborhood that is one of seven areas designated as a cultural district in Indianapolis. Broad Ripple lies around six miles, or twenty minutes, north of Downtown Indianapolis, and is voted the #1 Best Neighborhood in Indianapolis (niche.com).
Broad Ripple’s name comes from its origin on the shores of the White River. Jacob Coil, who established the neighborhood in 1836, “named this area Broad Ripple because the “ripple in the river at this point was the largest and widest in the country. (broadrippleindy.org)”
Today, around 17,000 people live in the Broad Ripple Village neighborhood, ranging from young professionals to new families to empty nesters. Around 61% of residents in the area own their homes as opposed to renting (niche.com).
On Niche.com, Broad Ripple receives an overall A+ rating. Its top categories are A’s in Housing, Good for Families, Nightlife, and Health & Fitness.

Broad Ripple Park | Broad Ripple Park is a 62-acre park that borders the White River. In addition to the rich green space, the park offers a Family Center with a variety of scheduled activities. Monon Trail | The Monon Trail runs through the heart of Broad Ripple Village. Spanning from downtown Indianapolis to twenty-seven miles away in Hamilton County, Broad Ripple residents can enjoy this asphalt walking and biking path. “Broad Ripple is a quaint unique town. With boutiques and restaurants of small business owners. It is low crime rate and beautiful scenery. The restaurants are unique and they are not franchised, with unique foods and creative talents of chefs and creative art along the main street in town. There are no other shops or restaurants in Indiana that are in Broad Ripple. So much diversity in this small unique town, diverse in people, food and art. There is a trail for walking and bike riding as well.”
