Carmel Overview

Hogan Moving |

Hogan Moving has been a part of the Indianapolis community since 1927. And, as a proud Indianapolis company, we’ve decided to start a blog series highlighting some of the great places to live in the area. For this blog, we’re highlighting the traffic circle capital of the world, Carmel.

Carmel, Indiana, in Hamilton County, is 14 miles north of Indianapolis. Until the 1800s, the area now known as Carmel went by the name Bethlehem and was originally inhabited by the Delaware Indians. The Town of Bethlehem was laid out by John Felps, Seth Green, Alexander Mills, and Daniel Warren in April of 1837. The name was changed to “Carmel,” after the Biblical mountain in 1856, and Carmel was officially incorporated in 1874. Always ahead of its time, one of the USA’s first automatic traffic signals was installed in Carmel in 1924.

Carmel Hot Spots

  • Carmel Arts & Design District

Located in the heart of Old Town Carmel, the Arts & Design District is home to interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, specialty shops, and restaurants.

  • The Center for the Performing Arts (including The Palladium, The Studio, and the Tarkington)

The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization responsible for the operation and programming of a multidisciplinary performing arts campus in Carmel. The Palladium, a state-of-the-art 1,600-seat concert hall; the Tarkington, a 500-seat proscenium theater; and the Studio Theater, a versatile black box with a seated capacity of 200 are all part of this impressive complex.

  • Museum of Miniature Houses & Other Collections

The Museum has hosted more than 110,000 visitors since its opening in 1993. They come from all over the United States and foreign countries each year. This is only one of a few museums in the country devoted to the art of fine-scale miniatures.

  • The Monon Trail

The Monon Trail is a bicycle trail that is a part of the Rails-to-Trails movement. The Monon in Carmel stretches from 96th Street to 146th Street and you’ll find a good amount of wooded areas and shade in this stretch of the trail. There is easy access to many amenities including bike rentals, public spaces, restaurants, bars, arts venues, special events, and the Monon Community Center (which includes an indoor and outdoor pool).

Hear from a Carmel local!
Here’s what one local had to say on Niche.com:

“We moved to Carmel from the northeast, and at the time I was wary of moving to Indiana – a state I knew nothing about other than farms. Boy, was I wrong? Carmel is beautiful- sophisticated, charming, kind, innovative, and stocked with families all working to create a beautiful life for their kids and themselves. Infrastructure is top-notch and well-planned, the homes and neighborhoods are gorgeous and affordable, the area is filled with good, high-paying jobs, the public school facilities are amazing, and the quality of teaching and programs offered – both public and community programs- are outstanding. As another poster said, come visit- you will be amazed! I’ve met so many transplants and some who moved just after seeing Carmel during a visit with friends. I can’t imagine another city offering the quality of life we have in Carmel, we are so grateful to live here. This city is the poster child of forward-thinking leadership as well as listening to what its residents want.”
