catalina-island-1587271_1280We recently wrote about some of the top coastal cities you could move to that match your lifestyle, and now we’re taking you one step further into the ocean by showing you different types of island life. We’ve discovered some of the top American islands that just might be the perfect place for your next home.

Which one would you move to?

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands: An Affordable Paradise

St. Croiz is an incorporated US island located in the Caribbean and is one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to The Financial Word, real estate on St. Croix is affordable, with real estate that can be purchased for as low as $50,000 for a three bedroom that may require some repair. You’ll also find that average rental costs for a two bedroom apartment is between $800 and $1,800, close to continental United States properties.

Hilton Head, South Carolina: An East Coast Adventure

This year, Travel and Leisure named Hilton Head as #1 on its list of continental U.S. islands. Why? Because, this little island has something for everyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors, is extremely bike friendly, and offers access to the ocean. Many families visit this South Carolina regularly, so if you can embrace the tourist season, this east coast island might be the one for you.

Big Island of Hawai’i, Hawaii: An Aloha Lifestyle

If you’re looking to live outside more than you stay inside, eat regional, seasonal and artistic cuisine, and embrace the aloha lifestyle, the big Island of Hawai’i is your place to move. While some areas of the island are more expensive that a US average, there are also cities that offer reasonable homes. And even though the cost of living might be higher, the Hawai’i’s city of Pahoa has been named one of the best places to live in the world.

Treasure Island, Michigan: A Freshwater Find

Treasure Island isn’t what you typically picture when you think about island life, but this little island has the amenities you’d want: sandy beaches, shorelines, and outdoor activities. Located on Higgins Lake, Michigan, Treasure Island has a nice assortment of local bars, restaurants, shops, and more, plus it was listed as one the most affordable islands in the US by The Financial World. The island is also close to numerous State Forests, perfect for the avid hiker or outdoor enthusiast.

Catalina Island, California: A Mediterranean Feel, Closer to Home

20 miles off the Southern California mainland lies Catalina Island, where many day-trippers visit via ferry or cruise ship. But, around 3,500 people call this little island home. Generally, living on Catalina means residing in Avalon. Avalon has a large harbor, a popular beach, and because of visitors, a nice variety of restaurants. The town also keeps the tourist feel to a minimum, giving it the feel of a “vintage coastal playground”. If you’re looking for the feel of a Mediterranean island, closer to home, Coastal Living says this is the place.

Key Largo, Florida: A Coastal Treasure

Do you wish you were surrounded by beautiful water? Do you want some of the best winter weather in the country? Do you want to adopt island time as your own? If you answered yes, yes, and yes, you should consider moving to Key Largo, one of the Florida Keys. Key Largo is close to the Florida coast, which means you’ll have quick mainland access, plus you’ll have the option to visit the other vibrant Keys when you please. If you haven’t heard about the beauty of the Florida Keys, do a quick search online, and you’ll find plenty!
